“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation…” (Luke 2:29-30, NKJV).
The Prophet Malachi penned the last word God sent through his spirit. He put his quill pen down. And then God was quiet for four hundred years.
Four hundred years of waiting. Four hundred years of silence. Generations were born, generations passed away. God’s people must have been sorely tempted to wonder if He had forgotten about them.
Has Heaven ever seemed completely silent to you?
After all this interminable waiting, Holy Spirit had revealed to a devout worshipper named Simeon that he would see the Lord’s Christ with his own eyes. And yet, even Simeon waited for decades upon decades without anything remarkable taking place. The years of his strength waned into the winter of his life, and still there was no sign of a Savior. As he walked slowly to the temple for prayers week after week, month after month, year after year, was it tempting for him to wonder if God had forgotten?
God had not forgotten. And neither has He forgotten you. Oftentimes it’s when you least expect it that His promise bursts into sight.
I love imagining what the day of actual fulfillment must have been like for Simeon. I’m thinking he went to bed the night before like he did every night. Nothing out of the ordinary to note in his evening routine. Nothing that could have remotely prepared him for what would happen the next day.
In the morning, he must have woken up, rubbed his aged joints, and gingerly risen from his bed. And then suddenly, the moment came when Holy Spirit began to stir an excitement in his heart. Unable to hold still, he must have gotten up out of his chair and paced. Soon, he found his feet walking once again in the direction of the temple – more quickly this time than his usual measured steps. Anticipation was becoming nearly overwhelming. What would he find there?
And then, arriving, he saw Him. His heart surely skipped a beat when he laid eyes on newborn Jesus in Mary’s arms. I imagine his kind, wrinkled face lighting up with ecstatic joy as he gazed upon the sight he had been waiting… longing… yearning to see his entire life. He must have instantly known. This was it!! Oh unspeakably holy moment, this was IT!! This was God’s salvation!! I see Holy Spirit filling his spirit to overflowing as he proclaimed, tears streaming down his face, “Now my eyes have seen!”
What word has God personally given to you? For you, too, the day of fulfillment is coming. Close your eyes and let your Holy Spirit-empowered imagination carry you away… What will that moment be like, when your own eyes see the promise?
