The Potter Who Sees

“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” (2 Chron. 16:9, NIV).

At this very moment, God is visually scanning the entire planet. Notice, according to this verse, what His eyes are looking for. They are not trying to find those that can deliver a pristine quality of service to Him. They are not on the hunt for those who have graduated at the top of their class or those whose resumes sparkle with pages upon pages of human achievement. They are not seeking out those with a clean slate, those who never fail Him, nor those free of any glaring weaknesses.

The only thing His eyes are searching for is fully committed hearts. Hearts that long for Him. Hearts staunchly loyal to Him; hearts steadfastly determined to keep on surrendering to His process. The rest is His job. As long as He has our devotion and our wholehearted willingness, He takes it upon Himself to mold and shape us into what He needs us to be.

“…To strengthen those…” Our strengthening is completely on Him. Our part is to continually seek after Him… and to just keep yielding as He pursues His relentlessly devoted undertaking: making us more and more like Him every day. He is eager to carry this out, zealously committed to provide absolutely everything necessary to this end. His eyes are ever piercing our reality, in ceaseless contact with our needs. His awareness of our condition is flawless, and the timing of His strengthening, impeccable. He will finish what He has begun.

“But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand” (Isa. 64:8, ESV). Imagine yourself for a moment as a lump of clay. Now can you picture the lump anxious about what the Potter is doing? “Um, Sir, don’t you think I need to be a little smoother over on this edge? I’m not sure You’re doing this right? If You’d listen, I have a few other helpful suggestions on how to execute this project…”

Ridiculous, right? Let’s just relax into His loving, skilled hands and let Him do what He does so magnificently well. Let’s trust His stunning expertise as He crafts us into completion. Not only were you His masterpiece at your conception, but every day of His continued work in you is carried out with fearful and wonderful proficiency!
