“So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” (Deut. 8:3-4, NKJV)
If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time, the concept of manna is extremely familiar to you. However, for those Israelites who first encountered it, it was entirely foreign.
Let’s imagine together for a moment the very first morning that they came out of their tents and saw the ground covered with the strange, unfamiliar substance. It was thin and flaky like frost, and they had no idea what to make of it. They scratched their heads, looked at each other, and asked, “What is it??”
Looking on in spirit, we can learn from this adventure of theirs. The first thing to notice is that we humans often do not recognize God’s provision when it comes. This was bread from heaven, the bread of angels even (see Ps. 78:25). It was both nutritious and sweet. It was supernatural and directly from the heart of God. It was exactly what their bodies needed. And yet they were mystified by it.
He is a good, good Daddy. “Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!” (Matt. 6:7, TLB). He has a predisposition to tend to and care for you with attentiveness that far surpasses that of the best earthly dad or mom you’ve ever encountered. Sometimes, though, we don’t quite understand what it is that He’s serving up to nourish our hungry souls.
Is there a need in your life that seems to have been going unmet? Have you been long knocking on Heaven’s doors about it? Is it possible that God has already put in front of you His perfect provision… and you just haven’t recognized it yet? Does He perhaps want to feed you with something you haven’t known before?
Here’s a new prayer to try out today: “Daddy, please open my eyes to recognize and receive the flawless, unfailing provision You are making for me right now!”
